The class will give participants a foundation for understanding the simplicities and complexities of this continuing conflict that affects the politics and economics of the entire Middle East, and much of the world. It will begin with the imperialist rivalries in the area from the late 19th century, examining the rise of Palestinian nationalism and Zionism, and moving through the beginning of Israeli nationhood, the war of 1967, and the various accords. The series will end with a probing look at the opportunities and dangers that are presented by the Gaza withdrawal and the Israeli wall in the context of Israel's role in the region, its relations with its neighbors, and the Palestinian aspiration for a viable nation.
